Knee pain in old age is very common. Sometimes, it is just a short-term issue. But in most cases, it is chronic (long-term). Chronic knee pain is usually caused by arthritis, which is common in old people. If you have short-term knee pain in old age, you do not have to see a doctor. There are numerous home remedies to cure knee pain. However, if it is chronic knee pain, as in the case of arthritis, you may need medical help to manage the situation. But then, home remedies for knee pain in old age can also be included in your treatment and management plan. They will surely help relieve you of pain.
There is virtually no major activity you can perform without moving your legs and hands. More so, there is no such joint in the body that bears as much pressure as the knee joint. The back probably bears more pressure than the knees do, but it is not a joint. Anyways, knee pain can be so severe in old age that it restricts the person’s physical activities and day-to-day function.
Knee pain is not always in the joint itself, sometimes the pain may be in the cartilage and ligament. There is nothing to bother about if the pain is short-term and if there is neither inflammation nor stiffness. You can largely treat it by yourself at home without seeing a doctor.
Home Remedies for Knee Pain in Old Age
The best remedy for your knee pain will somehow depend on what caused it in the first place. But then, certain home remedies are good for most types of knee joint pain. They are as follows:
Increase your physical activity
As you grow older, you may sometimes just feel like lying in bed and not do anything. More so, if you have slight knee pain, you become all the more tempted to minimize movement.
However, consistent physical activity is one of the codes to break knee pain. Regular exercise can even delay the onset of arthritis, which is the main cause of knee pain in elderly people.
When you are physically active, your joint health would be enhanced. More so, your body would receive strength and motivation to support your joints better.
For instance, exercises that strengthen your leg muscles reduce the pressure on your knee. As such, they are good for preventing and treating knee pain.
Watch your posture and get support when needed
Generally, as you grow older, you should not sit on chairs that put your knee at awkward angles. Don’t sit on low couches or chairs that you would “sink” into. You may support yourself with a pillow to raise yourself if you have to sit on a low chair.
Furthermore, check your sitting posture and make sure not to slouch or lean while sitting. And avoid sitting or staying in the same spot for long. These may make your joints stiff and worsen the pain.
Diet and Weight Loss
If you are overweight or obese, it is more likely that you would have knee pain in old age. This is because extra weight usually adds more pressure to your knee joint. So if you shed off some weight, you may be able to reduce or cure your knee pain.
More so, extra weight can increase inflammation. This aggravates the knee pain in arthritis. So, something as simple as weight loss may be the solution to your knee pain. However, you would need to manage your diet to maintain a healthy weight.
A good diet for healthy weight loss would be high in veggies, fruit, and fiber. Such a diet would be low in animal fats as well as other fats, and meat.
However, you should see your doctor’s counsel before you start following any diet or meal plan that claims to help with knee pain. Not all helpful diets are safe for everybody.
Other Natural Ways to Relieve Knee Pain in Old Age
Massages generally help to relieve pain. And it can relieve knee pain too. You can even do the massage yourself. You should do these massages while in a sitting position. Your knees should pint forward and your feet should be flat on the ground.
Once you are in that position, close your hands to make loose fists, and tap your upper, middle, and lower thigh with both of your hands 10 times each. Rest for a few seconds and repeat the procedure thrice.
You could also place your fist on your thigh, and then glide it down till you reach your knee. Repeat this simple massage procedure five times. Then, do the same procedure for the inner and outer sides of your thigh.
Older people have different sensitivities to weather when it comes to joint pains. Many old people are sensitive to cold, rainy, or damp weather conditions. In short, colder climates seem to sometimes worsen joint pain in elderly people, including knee pain.
More so, an elderly person should live in a nice climate; a place they enjoy being. Such environments will reduce the psychological effects of their knee pain.
The PRICE procedure
This procedure is more helpful if the knee pain is caused by a fall. PRICE is an acronym for five things:
P – Protect the knee to avoid further injury.
R – Rest the knee to allow the tissues to heal without further stress. However, do not stop all forms of movement. Physical activity is very important in relieving knee pain.
I – Ice for a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Wrap the ice pack with a cloth and apply it on the knee for 20 mins. This is best done the very first day you notice pain.
Make sure to wrap the ice before the application. Don’t apply the ice directly on your knee to avoid further damage.
C – Compress the knee with the use of knee support to increase comfort. Make the support bandage firm. But it must not be tight.
E – Elevate the leg (keep it raised) to reduce swelling and enhance blood circulation. Try to bring the knee up to the level of your heart.
How About Medications?
You can get over-the-counter painkillers for your knee pain. This is especially needed for treating knee pain linked to arthritis. To treat arthritis, you may even need some prescription drugs.
The following drugs can help relieve stiffness and pain:
- Chondroitin Sulfate
- Intra-articular hyaluronic acid
- Intra-articular corticosteroids
Intra-articular drugs are more effective than all the others. This is because they are usually injected directly into the joint. However, talk to your doctor before you use any medication.
Home remedies for knee pain in old age are very effective. But if you suspect that you may have arthritis, you should seek medical treatment. You may then support the treatment with home remedies.
